In the United States:

  • Trauma is the leading cause of death for individuals up to the age of 45.
  • It’s the fourth leading cause of death overall across all ages.
  • Nearly 40,000 lives are lost to homicide and suicide each year.
  • In 2001, over 30,000 suicides were reported.

Motor Vehicle Crashes:

  • In 2005, there were a staggering 43,443 deaths and 2.7 million injuries due to motor vehicle crashes in the US.

Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI):

  • TBI is the single largest cause of death from injury in the United States.
  • Annually, approximately 1,000,000 people in the US suffer from TBI.
  • Of these, 230,000 require hospitalization, and 50,000 lose their lives (comprising one-third of all trauma deaths).
  • A staggering 80,000 to 90,000 individuals live with long-term disability due to TBI.
  • Over 5 million people in the US are living with disabilities resulting from TBI, with an estimated cost exceeding $37.8 billion each year.
